About

how is value determined? how do we decide an object is valuable? perception.

silk is precious because it’s delicate and beautiful, but also because the amount of labor, skill and resources required to produce it are extreme. cashmere is valuable because the goats the fiber is harvested from are scarce and the method with which it is produced is labor intensive and costly. when viewed through a lens that magnifies qualities like rarity and extensive or expensive methods of production, vintage and repurposed materials can only be view as equally precious.

it requires years of use for a jacket to be worn in and worn out. it requires decades for fabrics in the bottoms of piles in the back of fabric stores to become the last yard while the rest was sold and cut and sewn.

these years and decades of waiting are the extensive production process. they have infused these materials with a rarity and beauty that cannot be reproduced.
